Since the CSRD wave, those working in facility or workplace management have been faced with questions that used to fall under the purview of finance or sustainability. Where does the material come from? How long does it remain in the cycle? Does this furniture add to or reduce the Scope 3 footprint? Does it actually benefit the team? Office pods serve as a useful litmus test because they address all three ESG dimensions simultaneously. This article demonstrates how Shelter Office Pods contribute to these goals, drawing on current research.
Office Pods Across All Three ESG Dimensions
Environmental
Swiss wood, a biogenic carbon store.
100% Swiss-made, short supply chains, 0.7–0.9 tons of CO₂ sequestered per cubic meter of wood, recyclable at the end of its life.
Social
Workplace Acoustics According to ISO 23351-1
Class A speech privacy, a retreat for focused work, an inclusion measure for neurodivergent employees.
Governance
Auditable supply chain, rental cycle
End-to-end value creation in Switzerland, a 5-year lease with buyback and refurbishment, and a documented circularity indicator.

Why Office Pods Have Suddenly Become an ESG Issue
Under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the ESRS E1 standard, purchased goods—including office furniture and room-in-room systems—are subject to reporting under Scope 3 if they are material. For large companies previously subject to the NFRD, the reporting requirement applies to the 2025 fiscal year (reporting in 2026). Other companies will follow on a phased basis. Swiss companies are also covered through subsidiaries, supply chains, or the revised Art. 964 of the Swiss Code of Obligations (OR). In practice: purchasing decisions in the workplace must increasingly include EPDs, certificates of origin, and life-cycle assumptions.
ESRS S1 requires parallel disclosures regarding workplace quality. Governance addresses the transparency and auditability of the entire system. Office pods therefore touch on all three ESG dimensions.
Environment: Swiss wood stores CO₂ instead of releasing it
Shelter is 100% Swiss-made. The wood is sourced and the product manufactured entirely in Switzerland. This has three implications for the Scope 3 model:
- Carbon sink. One cubic meter of wood used in construction stores approximately 0.7 to 0.9 tons of CO₂ as long as the material remains in the cycle. Each pod is therefore a walk-in carbon sink in the office.
- Short supply chains. A study commissioned by ASTRA and Lignum compared noise barriers made of Swiss wood with those made of lava concrete. The wood-based option performed better in terms of CO₂ emissions and energy consumption, primarily due to regional value creation. The same principle applies to office pods.
- No composite materials. Steel frames and multi-layered plastic panels, commonly used in many imported pod brands, result in high manufacturing emissions and make end-of-life recycling difficult.
For ESRS-E1 reporting, this allows us to formulate a verifiable statement: A Shelter Pod is a net carbon sink in the “Purchased Goods & Services” category. With proof of origin and material composition, this holds up in the audit.
Social: What the 2024/25 research says about noise and performance
The social impact of office pods is often underestimated. Research, however, is becoming increasingly clear on this point.
- A bibliometric review published in *Theoretical Issues in Ergonomics Science* in 2025 analyzed 1,693 studies on noise and cognitive performance. Conclusion: Irrelevant background chatter—the classic open-office noise—is the most frequently documented cause of loss of concentration, stress, and errors.
- An experimental study published in *Noise & Health* (Sobhani Dargah et al., 2025) shows that office noise reduces cognitive performance. The extent of this effect varies depending on an individual’s personality profile. Quiet rooms serve as an inclusion measure in this setting.
- A review in *Building Acoustics* (Felipe Contin de Oliveira et al., 2023) links office noise to poor self-reported health: headaches, fatigue, and higher rates of sick leave. An ESG-S metric that appears directly in HR reports.
Shelter Pods are acoustically designed to reduce speech intelligibility to the outside in accordance with ISO 23351-1. This protects both parties: the person inside the pod, who is working in a focused or confidential manner, and the team outside, who are not overheard. For neurodivergent employees—a growing focus of DEI efforts—the quiet interior is often the difference between productive work and giving up.
Working side by side is wonderful. Constantly overhearing one another, less so.

Governance: Verifiable, documented, auditable
The "G" component of ESG is where most purchasing decisions fall short due to a lack of evidence. Two specific measures can help here.
- A transparent, short supply chain. 100% of the wood and manufacturing take place in Switzerland. Origin, processing steps, and emission factors can be documented without any “black boxes.” This eliminates the need for months of supplier inquiries under the new EU rules on deforestation-free wood (EUDR) and in ESRS audits.
- Renting as a documented cycle. Shelter Pods are available on a 5-year lease, starting at CHF 172 per month for the Single, CHF 259 for the Duo, and CHF 282 for the Quattro (current website prices). Ownership remains with the manufacturer, as does responsibility for take-back, refurbishment, and reuse. For ESG reporting, this serves as a circularity indicator; for financial management, it provides a predictable OPEX item instead of CAPEX depreciation.
What specifically contributes to the ESG report
For workplace and facility teams that coordinate data points with the sustainability department:
| ESRS category | data point | Post: Shelter Pod |
|---|---|---|
| E1 Scope 3, Category 1 | Purchased Goods & Services, Emissions | Low carbon footprint thanks to Swiss wood and short transport distances |
| E1 / E5 | Recyclability, material recovery | 5-year lease with buyback and refurbishment |
| E1 | Bound biogenic CO₂ | ≈ 0.7–0.9 tons of CO₂ per cubic meter of wood used in construction |
| S1 | Workplace Quality, Health | Acoustic retreat, ISO 23351-1-compliant speech level reduction. |
| S1 / DEI | Inclusion, Neurodiversity | A low-stimulus, predictable work environment |
| G1 | Supplier transparency | 100% Swiss-made, fully traceable |
Conclusion
The requirements for sustainability reporting will not be relaxed in 2025 and 2026. Anyone purchasing a room-in-room system today is making an ESG decision, whether consciously or not. At Shelter, this means Swiss ash with measurable biogenic CO₂ sequestration, acoustics compliant with ISO 23351-1 backed by evidence from current research, and a 5-year lease that documents the cycle.
